Research:
The antispasmodic properties of peppermint have been confirmed in clinical trials. In one trial peppermint was found to be beneficial in helping reduce colonic spasm during endoscopy. Clinical trials involving patients who have just had a colostomy found that peppermint oil helped to reduce much of the distress associated with a colostomy. Patients were given oral doses of enteric-coated capsules containing peppermint. Peppermint was chosen as it not only had an odour that would mask the odour from the colostomy bag, but also because of its effect on the smooth muscle of the bowel. It was found to reduce colonic pressure and prevent foaming, all of which helped to reduce post-operative colic and the frequency of bag change.
Menthol has been reported as nasal decongestant, probably because of cool sensation thought to be due to the stimulation of the nasal cavity thermo receptors.
Analgetic (pain relief) property of Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is used in liniments for the relief of muscle pain, lumbago, bruises, joint pain and insect bites. The local anaesthetic action of peppermint is significant. The oil is recommended for myalgia and neuralgia.

Peppermint is a great cosmetic agent for oily skin; it can also be used to relieve any kind of skin irritation or itching, but it should be used in a dilution of 1% or less or irritation may be made worse. Steam treatment with peppermint is recommended to cleans and decongest the skin. It cools by constricting the capillaries and is a very refreshing skin tonic.
Recommendations for Use:
Topical application – massage, inhalation (direct inhalation and steam inhalation), oil burner, bath, ointment, skin care, mouthwash, compress, etc
Aromamassage: mix 4-6 drops with about 15 ml of carrier oil. Blending is recommended.
Direct (cold) inhalation: Place 1-2 drops on Austraroma aromastone, aromamedallion, or your handkerchief.
Facial Steam bath for oily skin: pour 2-3 drops to hot water. Duration: 5-7 min. Avoid contact of steam with eyes.
Oil burner: mix 4 - 6 drops of oil with water. Blending is recommended.
Aroma Bath: blend 5 - 7 drops with about 10 ml of a neutral base, like bubble bath or shampoo. Then add to bath water.
Cosmetics: add 4-6 drops to 15 ml of base cream or body wash shampoo
Mouthwash: add 1 drop of peppermint oil to a glass of water and gargle
