Main Applications of Eucalyptus Blue Mallee Oil
Best known as a decongestant inhalation for colds and catarrh. During cold or flu, the nasal and lower respiratory passages become swollen and constricted, this makes breathing difficult. Research indicates that inhalation with eucalyptus oil can significantly improve respiratory function. The mechanism of action is reflex, nerve stimulation by essential oils of cold receptors in the nose (decongestant action). Also there is enhanced production of surfactant in lungs during cold and flu (wet cough); along with menthol, eucalyptus oil reduces surface tension between water and air in the lungs, working as expectorant.
- E. Blue Mallee is the best known home remedy for colds; especially it is useful for sinus conditions because it can be breathed very closely without triggering a cough reflex. Many sources say it is the oil of choice for infections high up in the chest. The oil is used as an inhalant with boiling water, or a few drops are placed on a handkerchief, for children – a lump of sugar or honey with a drop of eucalyptus oil.
- Widely used for treatment of asthma and bronchitis
- For the relief of colds, muscular pain, rheumatism, and similar complaints
- As disinfectant (spray with eucalyptus oil) and to freshen the atmosphere in sick rooms
- As insecticide
- As a cleaning agent (cleans the traces of sticky tape)
